Safety: the UCI launches a call for expressions of interest for the development of protective equipment

At its most recent Management Committee meeting on 29 and 30 January, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) decided to launch a call for expressions of interest relating to the development of protective equipment for riders in both the men’s and women’s pelotons, with the aim of enhancing their safety in the event of a crash.

Already in contact with several players in the sector, the UCI now wishes to broaden the initiative to the greatest number possible of manufacturers and institutes working on the development of airbags and technical apparel for cyclists.

The objectives of this initiative are as follows:

• regarding airbag systems: to define a clear framework and appropriate standards to enable the development and integration of such devices into cycling (in competition and training);
• regarding technical apparel: to study the integration of airbag solutions into clothing and to identify ways to further strengthen the protection offered by textiles.

For the UCI, it is essential to bring together the various relevant parties to:

• analyse the relevance of this equipment across the different disciplines;
• develop a regulatory framework defining clear and relevant standards for competitive cycling;
• encourage coherent development of protective equipment that meets the needs of riders and teams, and is in line with the industrial realities faced by manufacturers.

A broad consultation, in the form of working groups for each of the topics, will then be organised during 2026 with the parties who respond to this call as well as independent experts.

For the UCI and the stakeholders brought together within SafeR – the body dedicated to safety in men’s and women’s road cycling – the continuous improvement of rider safety remains a top priority.

Sécurité : l’UCI lance un appel à manifestations d’intérêt pour le développement d’équipements de protection

Lors de la dernière réunion de son Comité Directeur, les 29 et 30 janvier, l’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) avait décidé de lancer un appel à manifestations d’intérêt portant sur le développement d’équipements de protection des coureurs des pelotons masculins et féminins, afin de renforcer leur sécurité en cas de chute.

Déjà en contact avec plusieurs acteurs du secteur, l’UCI souhaite élargir la démarche au plus grand nombre possible de fabricants et d’instituts travaillant sur le développement d’airbags et de vêtements techniques pour cyclistes.

Les objectifs de cette initiative sont les suivants :

• concernant les systèmes d’airbags: définir un cadre clair et des normes adaptées pour permettre le développement et l’intégration de tels dispositifs dans la pratique cycliste (compétition et entraînement) ;
• concernant les vêtements techniques: étudier l’intégration de solutions d’airbags dans les tenues et identifier des pistes visant à renforcer la protection offerte par les textiles.

Pour l’UCI, il est essentiel de rassembler les différents acteurs concernés afin :

• d’analyser la pertinence de ces équipements selon les disciplines ;
• d’élaborer un cadre réglementaire définissant des standards clairs et pertinents pour le cyclisme en compétition ;
• de favoriser un développement cohérent des dispositifs de protection, répondant à la fois aux besoins des coureurs et des équipes, et aux réalités industrielles des fabricants.

L’UCI invite tous les acteurs concernés à manifester leur intérêt d’ici au 15 mars 2026 via le formulaire suivant : https://wkf.ms/4sSpdhn. Ce formulaire est également disponible dans la section Équipement du site internet de l’UCI.

Une large consultation, sous la forme de groupes de travail pour chacun des sujets, sera ensuite organisée au cours de l’année 2026 avec les acteurs qui auront répondu à cet appel ainsi que des experts indépendants.

Pour l’UCI et les parties prenantes réunies au sein de SafeR – la structure dédiée à la sécurité dans le cyclisme sur route masculin et féminin –, l’amélioration continue de la sécurité des coureurs demeure une priorité.
